Snow, drizzle on tap for Metro Detroit

Winter weather advisories gave way to the chance of snow and drizzle Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

The more moderate weather, a change from what appeared earlier to include all the hazards of winter travel in one day: rain, sleet, snow and freezing drizzle, also will include temperatures in the low 20s on Tuesday night.

"We have a warm front that's slowly coming up from the south," said Steve Considine, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township. "It's just moving very slowly. In fact it's going to kind of stall out just north of Metro Detroit before it moves to the east early (Wednesday) morning."

At rush hour Tuesday on area freeways, motorists were traveling at a rate of 51 to 60 miles per hour in most spots, with speeds as low as 41 to 50 miles per hour in some stretches and and fast as 61 to 70 miles in others, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation traffic map.

A disabled vehicle slowed traffic on the northbound Lodge Freeway near Meyers. The map also showed a few recently cleared accidents including one on southbound Interstate 75 in Detroit and one on eastbound Interstate 96 in Novi.

Wednesday will be mostly cloudy with temperatures reaching about 31 degrees and falling to around 20 by 5 p.m., the National Weather Service said. Temperatures Wednesday night will be around 5, with a wind chill of as low as -7.

Sun should return Thursday, when temperatures should be near 16 with a wind chill as low as -6.
