Bay City to remove playground, contaminated soil

Bay City — Bay City officials plan to take down a 19-year-old playground on the city’s west side in the coming months and remove contaminated soil at the site.

Imagination Station, a wooden playground at Veterans Memorial Park along the Saginaw River, won’t be open this spring after snow melts. Officials say it’s a liability issue and needs too many repairs.

The structure deteriorated over the years and has been vandalized. Pressure-treated wood used to build it is contaminating the soil, which officials say came back positive for arsenic. As part of the cleanup, the top 12 to 18 inches of soil will be removed.

The Bay City Times reports officials are planning a new, $250,000 to $300,000 modern play structure that’s also to be called Imagination Station, or Imagination Station II.
