Search for missing woman along lake at Pointe Mouillee
Several law enforcement agencies are searching a patch of the Lake Erie shore in Monroe County for a woman who disappeared in October.
The search for Chelsea Bruck, 22, of Maybee wasn’t prompted by a tip, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.
Instead, the agencies were taking advantage of the weather. They wanted to see if the melted snow yielded anything at the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area in Berlin Township, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
The game area is five miles from the Newport farmhouse where Bruck was last seen leaving a raucous Halloween party Oct. 25 with an unidentified man.
Dozens of officers from the sheriff’s office and other law enforcement agencies in Monroe County gathered at the gaming area Thursday morning.
Bruck’s family and volunteers have searched all over Monroe County and distributed half a million fliers around the country.
Her mother, Leannda, who continues to work from a former bank office that serves as the family’s search headquarters, said she will never stop looking for her daughter.
“Moms don’t get days off, especially for this,” she said. “This doesn’t quit. This doesn’t change.”
One of Bruck’s sisters said she was heartened by the sheriff’s continued interest in the case.
Writing on the Facebook page “Help Find Chelsea Bruck,” Megan Bruck echoed her mom’s comments about not giving up hope.
“We WILL find her and we WILL bring her home,” wrote Megan.
Bruck left the party, which had been marred by fights, around 3 a.m., witnesses told police. She was last seen walking toward parked cars.
The party was attended by 600 people but most were too drunk or high to help police, who remain stymied in their investigation.
Among the 600 tips police received were two that led to charges against the tipsters for providing false information.
Kerri Carr, 29, of Toledo claimed her former boyfriend killed Bruck and dumped her body in a cemetery. Harlin Bird, 19, of Flat Rock told police two men drove off with Bruck.
Carr and Bird were charged with lying to police.
