Ice floe traps fishermen on Lake Erie, prompting rescue
Monroe — Four fishermen who were trapped in boats when an ice floe surrounded them on Lake Erie have made it to safety with help from rescuers.
The Monroe News reports the Monroe men were in three flat-bottom boats near the mouth of the River Raisin on Thursday when the wind pushed big chunks of ice toward them.
Sgt. Scott Smiley of the Monroe Fire Department says ice was pushed on top of one of the boats, sinking it. One boat was able to escape from the ice while the other was stranded. Rescuers reached the scene by boat and by walking across the ice.
Smiley says people should be wary of ice floes while fishing in open water during this time of year.
