Man dies following skiing accident at Crystal Mountain

Associated Press

Weldon Township — Officials say a 40-year-old man has died of injuries after a skiing accident at Crystal Mountain in Michigan’s northwestern Lower Peninsula.

Crystal Mountain says in a statement the local man, whose name wasn’t released, died after the Sunday morning accident at its North Face slopes complex. The resort is in Benzie County’s Weldon Township, about 25 miles southwest of Traverse City.

The resort says the man was wearing a helmet and, according to witnesses, speed was a factor as he appeared to lose control, striking a tree. Ski Patrol arrived within minutes and began providing medical care until emergency medical workers arrived.

The man taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The North Face was closed for about three hours after the accident.

The death is under investigation.
