The official first day of spring was more than a month ago, but wintry weather persists with low temperatures and a chance of snow flurries.

“We’re looking at highs in the mid-40s, a little bit breezy and cloudy,” National Weather Service meteorologist Dan Thompson said. “There’s a couple flurries possible early on, too.”

Overnight temperatures are expected to dip below freezing in the metro area, while areas further from the city could hit the mid-20s, Thompson said.

Friday should bring warmer temperatures, but it will remain about 10 degrees colder than normal.

“Plenty of sunshine with highs in the low- to mid-50s,” Thompson said of Friday’s forecast. “It’ll feel a little bit better.”

The normal high for late April is 62 degrees, Thompson said.

Saturday and Sunday are expected to be dry with temperatures remaining in the 50s.

“On Saturday, there’s a slight chance that we might see some rain, especially down south near the Ohio border,” Thompson said. “But confidence isn’t really high on that yet, it’s only about a 30 percent chance of rain.”

The unseasonably cold weather is caused by a low pressure system stuck over southern Canada, Thompson said.

“That’s associated with a lot of cold air,” he said.

But as Metro Detroiters return to work Monday, the region might get another taste of spring weather, Thompson said.

“It looks like it’ll get into the upper-50s, closer to 60 degrees Monday through Wednesday.”
