Portage — A 52-year-old Kalamazoo woman has been killed in a crash while fleeing police in western Michigan.

State police Lt. Dale Hinz tells the Kalamazoo Gazette that the crash occurred early Friday morning near railroad tracks in Portage, south of Grand Rapids.

The woman’s vehicle was being briefly pursued by a Kalamazoo County sheriff’s deputy.

Hinz says it was not immediately known why the deputy was trying to stop the woman’s vehicle. The chase and crash are under investigation by the state police.

The woman’s name was not released.
