After record warmth, storms in Metro Detroit forecast

Metro Detroit tied the record high temperature for Friday with warm air and sunny skies, but stormy weather is on the way for the weekend.

The National Weather Service predicts showers and thunderstorms, mostly after midnight. Then, “We’ll at least have a chance of storms and thunderstorms in the forecast through Monday,” meteorologist Dan Thompson said.

Highs Saturday should reach the upper 70s with a nearly 50 percent chance of rain, the weather service said. After lows around 60, much the same is expected on Mother’s Day, with the thermometer hitting the mid-70s.

“We can’t rule out stronger storms on Saturday or Sunday, but we’re not expecting a widespread weather event,” Thompson said.

The best chance for severe weather comes Monday as a cold front pushes through with highs again near the upper 70s, Thompson said.

On Friday, Detroit Metro Airport registered a high of 87 degrees — 20 above normal for the date and tying the record set last year, according to weather service data.

“It’s definitely unusually warm right now,” Thompson said.

Don’t get used to it, though. After storms Monday, the region “cools off significantly,” Thompson said. Highs by Wednesday could reach only the upper 50s.
