Coast Guard investigates after death in Saginaw River
Saginaw — The U.S. Coast Guard is conducting an investigation following the death of a boater following last week’s collision involving a tugboat pushing a barge in the Saginaw River.
The body of 53-year-old Robert Todd of Vassar was found Monday in the river. Todd and 25-year-old David Brigham of Vassar were knocked into or jumped into the Saginaw River on Friday when the small boat they were on had engine trouble and was struck.
Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Lauren Laughlin tells The Saginaw News the cause is under investigation. Details weren’t released.
Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel says Coast Guard investigators are looking into whether a lookout was required on the barge. Federspiel’s department also is investigating. The small boat was hit near the Bay County-Saginaw County line.
