Black bear wanders into Michigan city, causes stir
Alpena — A young black bear that caused a stir after wandering into a northern Michigan city has been captured and safely released into the woods.
The Alpena News reports the bear was spotted Wednesday near the Alpena post office. Police, firefighters and the Department of Natural Resources responded, following the bear as it climbed a tree, then ran away and swam across a river.
Police chased in bear into another tree. It was tranquilized before being safely lowered to the ground as a crowd of about 100 cheered, clapped and whistled. The bear was released about 35 miles away.
Lt. Eric Hamp says it’s the first bear he’s encountered in the city in his 12 years on the force. He says a bear “isn’t something we were ever trained for.”
