Marquette — A foul smell that drifted over part of Marquette is being blamed on compost.

WLUC-TV reports police say last year’s leaf piles were turned over recently at the city’s compost site, creating a strong odor.

The leaf piles are turned regularly, but police say atmospheric conditions were just right Wednesday for the smell to drift over the north side of the Upper Peninsula city.
