An 11-year-old Wayne boy drowned in Lake Erie Friday afternoon after he was swept away from the shoreline in Monroe County, officials said.

The incident happened around 4:10 p.m. just south of Sterling State Park in Frenchtown Township, said Frenchtown Township Fire Chief Mark Nicholai.

“He was trying to swim from one bank to the other,” the chief said. “The undercurrent may have been a factor.”

The Frenchtown Township Fire Department responded to the incident as well as the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department Dive Team, Monroe Township Fire Department, city of Monroe Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard and Monroe Community Ambulance.

The boy’s uncle tried to rescue him, but was unsuccessful, said Sgt. Rob Moody of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

The boy was located about 45 minutes later, 25 yards from shore in four feet of water, officials said.

He was taken to Promedica Monroe Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
