Port Huron-Mackinac sailboat race begins 91st running
Port Huron — The annual sailboat race from Port Huron to Mackinac Island has begun its 91st running.
The Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race started Saturday, with about 250 teams entered. Race chairman Peter Wenzler says everything is getting underway “with a decent breeze out of the Southeast” and “plenty of heat.”
The first boats typically cross the finish line on Sunday. Winners are determined based on a handicapping system.
The event caps a week of festivities in Port Huron, and thousands of spectators typically watch on shore as the fleet makes its way in a parade to the start.
The Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit organizes the event. This year is the club’s 100th anniversary.
