Michigan warns heat, dry weather could fuel wildfires

Associated Press

Lansing — Michigan authorities say there’s a growing danger of wildfires because of hot weather and a lack of rain in many parts of the state.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday the conditions mean it’s classifying the fire danger as high to very high in wide areas of the state. It says the conditions probably will persist into the weekend.

Department fire prevention specialist Dan Laux says there have been more fires recently. He says the department is asking people “to be cautious with any outdoor fires.”

Laux says anyone planning to light fires from now into the weekend should use fire rings in nonflammable areas that are sheltered from the wind. He says they should have water and a shovel nearby.
