Missing U.S. Marine found dead on Drummond Island after gunfire
Drummond Island — State police say two federal agents were helping to search for a missing U.S. Marine when they exchanged gunfire with him.
Hours later Thursday, state police found Aaron Andrew Furness, 38, of Woodbridge, Virginia, dead inside a remote cabin. Police say Friday the cause is under investigation.
Police say Furness was reported missing Wednesday and was believed to be in the area. Around 2:30 a.m., agents from U.S. Border Patrol discovered footprints and tracked them to a cabin. They were shot at and took cover while returning gunfire.
Police say Furness retreated into the cabin and was found dead inside.
The island is in Lake Huron in Chippewa County’s Drummond Township, about 50 miles southeast of Sault. Ste. Marie.
