Michigan car ferry shut down after car catches fire

Associated Press

Ironton, Mich. — Authorities say a northern Michigan car ferry is shut down this weekend after a fire damaged the vessel.

The U.S. Coast Guard says the 50-foot, four-car cable ferry Charlevoix is expected to be idled until Monday as crews assess damage from the Friday afternoon blaze. Coast Guard officials say a vehicle caught fire aboard the vessel while it was docked on Lake Charlevoix in the northwestern Lower Peninsula.

Officials say there were no reported injuries among passengers and crewmembers.

The vessel is also known as the Ironton Ferry. It generally operates from mid-April through mid-November on the lake’s south arm.
