Ann Arbor – A 23-year-old Whitmore Lake man was in stable condition at University Hospital after falling through a skylight 20 feet onto a tiled gymnasium floor at Abbot Elementary School, according to Ann Arbor police.

Sgt. Jeff Tabeling said drugs and/or alcohol are suspected to be involved in the accident.

“He was up there trespassing with some friends, but he was the only one who fell through the roof,” said Tabeling. “There’s no good explanation for why they were up there.”

The man, who was not identified Sunday night, suffered facial and hip fractures.

A similar incident occurred in Ann Arbor in July, which resulted in the death of a 21-year-old University of Michigan student.

The student fell through a glass ceiling at Ann Arbor’s Nickel’s Arcade, according to Ann Arbor police Detective Lt. Robert Pfannes at the time.

The man had climbed the fire escape to the top of the nearly three-story structure with a friend. They successfully crossed the glass roof once and tried to cross back when the 21-year-old feel three stories through the roof.

He was taken to University Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
