Kentwood — Police say an officer fatally shot a man who pointed a handgun at the officer at an apartment complex in western Michigan.

The Kentwood Police Department says two officers responded shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday to a call about a possible suicidal man at Sutton Club Apartments in Kentwood, near Grand Rapids.

Police say the officers knocked on the 47-year-old man’s door and he came out of the apartment and pointed a gun at one of the officers. Police say the officer shot the man, who died of his injuries. Names of those involved weren’t immediately released.

The officers weren’t injured. Police say the officer who shot the man is a 6-year veteran of the department.

The Kent County sheriff’s department is handling the investigation.
