Fees increasing at Sleeping Bear Dunes
Empire — Entrance and camping fees are increasing next year at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore near Traverse City to help fund maintenance and upgrades.
The National Park Service announced Tuesday that entrance fees for vehicles will rise to $15 and entrance fees for hikers and bikers will rise to $7 as of Jan. 1 at the park in Empire. Both passes are good for seven days.
Fees at the D.H. Day Campground will climb to $16, while staying at the Platte River Campground will cost $18. Visitors who reserve a camping spot ahead of time also will pay slightly more.
The Grand Rapids Press reports that the fee increases will fund rehabilitation of the South Manitou Island Lighthouse, preservation work at the Port Oneida Rural Historic District, an increase in custodial services, new exhibits and campground accommodations for electric vehicles.
