Early morning rains served up a nasty commute for Metro Detroit residents.

While the traffic flow in the metro area has since returned to mostly normal, early commuters found themselves in crawling conditions on major freeways as late as 8:15 a.m.

Choke points included: northbound traffic on Interstate 75 from West Road to Dix, in Trenton; on the Southfield Freeway between Six and Eight Mile roads, in Detroit; and in the northbound lanes of I-75 between Eight Mile and the I-696 interchange in Royal Oak.

Much of the traffic slow downs were due to large amounts of rain that soaked southeastern Michigan over a short period of time. The White Lake Township station of the National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather forecast for southeastern Michigan.

The forecast for Wednesday and Thursday includes the chance of thunderstorms during late Wednesday morning. The chance of thunderstorms will be mainly toward the Ohio border, but heavy rains are expected through the metro area.

According to the weather service, wind gusts of up to 45 mph are also possible Thursday through Tuesday of next week.

“We’ve received about three-quarters to an inch of rain in the last six hours,” said Joseph Clark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service station in White Lake Township, around 8 a.m. “We’ll likely get around another half inch or so in the next two to three hours.”

Fortunately, the worst may be over.

“It’s kind of in the process of winding down right now,” Clark said. “In the Detroit area, the rain will remain a little heavier for the next two to three hours. Then it will wind down to some lighter showers.”

The rest of Wednesday is expected to be cloudy with highs in the upper 50s.
