St. Clair County Sheriff’s officials are working to identify human remains found this week in Burtchville Township.

Two hunters were tracking a trail of blood from a deer they shot shortly before noon Monday when the pair stumbled upon a human skull in game lands off State Road, about a half-mile south of Burtch Road, officials said.

The men contacted the Sheriff’s Office, and authorities launched a probe.

“While searching the immediate area, more bones were found within a 10-foot radius of where the skull had been discovered,” sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

The St. Clair County Medical Examiner’s Office transported the bones to the McLaren Port Huron hospital morgue for analysis.

The time, cause and manner of death remained unknown Thursday. Detectives were checking missing person databases and using other methods to help identify the person, county authorities said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (810) 987-1726.
