Power struggle behind brawl at Sikh temple service

Portage — Police say a power struggle between two groups at a Sikh temple in southwestern Michigan led to a fight involving about 30 men and women.

Portage Public Safety Lt. Brian VandenBrink tells the Kalamazoo Gazette for a story Monday that the Nov. 15 brawl started after a member of one of the groups tried to play an instrument during the service.

That man had been banned from participating in services.

Three people were injured. Police are reviewing video from temple cameras and also seized two ceremonial swords that had been removed from the pulpit during the fight.

Once completed, detectives plan to turn their investigation over to prosecutors. No arrests have been made

VandenBrink says the conflicts have been going on “for about a year-and-a-half.”
