Ex-lawyer pleads guilty to stealing $100K from client
Lansing — A 67-year-old northern Michigan man has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $100,000 from an elderly woman who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease while he was serving as a lawyer.
Michael Aho Kennedy of Petoskey was charged in October with embezzlement from a vulnerable adult and embezzlement by a trustee. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette announced Wednesday that Kennedy pleaded guilty in Emmet County District Court.
An investigation into Kennedy began in 2012 after the Internal Revenue Service alerted the victim’s family of problems with her living trust.
Investigators determined that Kennedy transferred funds from the woman’s trust into his office checking account beginning in 2006 until the trust was drained.
Kennedy was disbarred in March by the State of Michigan Attorney Discipline Board.
He’s scheduled for sentencing Feb. 16.
