Turn down the thermostat, Christmas week is going to be as warm as a fresh plate of snickerdoodles.

“Currently, December is averaging 8 degrees above normal for today,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Sara Schultz, working from the White Lake Township office. “We’re looking at temperatures in the lower 50s for Christmas Eve. In fact, we have a chance of breaking the old record of 61 degrees for Dec. 24, which was set in 1881.”

How warm has December been?

Normally, the average high for December is 31 degrees with an average low of 24. For December 2015, the average high is 47.5 with an average low of 34.7, making the average low for this December higher than the average high in normal years.

“We have rain on Monday, which will slowly taper off into Tuesday,” Schultz said. “Then we’ll have some precipitation on Wednesday and into Wednesday night. Christmas Day will be dry and about 45 degrees.”

Fun facts

To date, the warmest day in the metro area was 63 degrees registered on Dec. 12.

The lowest high temperature for the month was 31 degrees marked on Dec. 19.

On Dec. 20, the metro area registered a record high minimum temperature when the thermometer hit 51 degrees. The old record was 50 degrees set in 1991.

Total precipitation for the month is .31 inches, 1.30 below normal.

A check of NWS records for snow shows nothing but a row of zeros for every day in December, except for a “T” (trace) on the 19th.
