Escanaba — The northern Michigan community of Escanaba is preparing to ring in the New Year with its 3rd annual midnight pasty drop.

A New Year’s Eve celebration is set for Thursday evening at the Downtown Development Authority building with food, refreshments and music. A huge pasty made of wire and lights will be lowered from a crane outside the building at midnight.

A pasty is a baked pastry commonly filled with meat and potatoes and made popular by miners who emigrated to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula decades ago. It’s still a popular food.

The Daily Press reports the public also is invited to watch the winter “Rock the Dock” fireworks at the municipal dock at Ludington Park.
