Michigan race track bought and closing to public
Fife Lake — A white flag is waving at a northern Michigan raceway.
The Traverse City Record-Eagle and WWTV report the Cherry Raceway near the Grand Traverse County community of Fife Lake is under new ownership and closing. The track southeast of Traverse City that’s been open since 1979 was recently bought by Stephen Batzer from Roger Steig, and Batzer plans to use some of the property for his engineering business.
Steig says he’s upset and thought the buyer’s intentions were to keep the race track open.
Batzer says that wasn’t part of the agreement. He adds residential neighbors tell him they are happy and welcome less noise.
Batzer bought about 15 acres north of the track in 2013 and knew about the raceway. His company performs forensic engineering and vehicle testing.
