Snow showers, extreme cold hamper motorists

Travel was tricky on Metro Detroit freeways Monday night after light snow showers made for slippery pavement and resulted in a number of accidents reported by the Michigan Department of Transportation’s traffic information website.

As of 11 p.m., MDOT’s MiDRive site reported at least three accidents on Interstate 696 — one on eastbound I-696 near Orchard Lake Road, another near the Lodge and the third near Campbell/Hilton Roads.

It also tracked another accident on northbound Interstate 75 near Eight Mile.

Driving issues began earlier Monday evening, when a two-car collision shortly before 6 p.m.resulted in a vehicle on its side on the eastbound Davison ramp to northbound I-75. Lt. Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police said he was not aware of any injuries in the crash.

Temperatures will drop to the single digits overnight, said Deb Elliott, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township. Wind chills were expected to remain below zero.

Elsewhere in the state, the National Weather Service issued a winter-weather advisory for the Grand Rapids area until 7 a.m. Tuesday. Two to 3 inches of snow was expected and the weather service warned motorists of the potential for slippery roads.

On Wednesday, up to an inch of snow is possible, but by the weekend, the area will see a “slight moderating trend” with temperatures reaching into the low 30s, said National Weather Service meteorologist Dan Thompson.

The rest of the seven-day forecast involves minimal snow, Thompson said.
