Snow, cold continues to hit Metro Detroit

A special weather statement has been issued Wednesday for Metro Detroit, warning of heavy snow but little accumulation, according to the National Weather Service in White Lake Township.

“Bands of heavy snow showers” are expected to move southeast from M-59 to the areas of Interstate 96, I-696 and I-94, the weather service said on its website. The movement is expected between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Wednesday with snow possibly reaching Adrian and Monroe later in the morning.

“Widely varying snowfall is expected from the northern suburbs of Detroit through Ann Arbor and downriver areas,” officials said. “Accumulations less than one inch (expected) in short bursts.”

The weather service warned drivers of reduced visibility and hazardous conditions on untreated roads.

The special weather statement comes as the area is enveloped in a deep freeze this week.

“Winter is digging in for a couple days,” meteorologist Bryan Tilley said Tuesday. “Especially in terms of temperature.”

Wednesdays’ high temperatures are expected to hover in the mid to upper 20s, but Thursday and Friday should struggle to see 20 degrees, Tilley said. As the weekend approaches, Metro Detroit could face single-digits with zero or below zero wind chills.
