Bitter cold forecast for weekend
A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for much of southeast Michigan as bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills are expected to plunge most of the region into a deep freeze, according to the National Weather Service.
Subzero wind chills are forecast for Saturday morning, and it won’t warm up much the rest of the day, said meteorologist Sara Schultz.
“... We’re only warming up — if you want to say ‘warm up’ — to around 14 degrees,” she said.
Metro Detroiters faced with low wind chills should bundle up and avoid long periods outdoors, according to the weather service.
Hypothermia and frostbite become risks after about 30 minutes when wind chills hit 10 degrees below zero, Schultz said.
Luckily, the deep freeze should be short-lived.
“Saturday’s going to be the worst, and it’ll kind of stay cool on Sunday with highs around 18,” Schultz said.
“But then we do rebound back above freezing, or right around freezing, next week.”
But before next week’s relative warm-up, other areas in and out of Michigan are expected to endure this weekend’s freeze.
A wind chill advisory for the Thumb warns of wind chills bottoming out at 25 below, Schultz said.
And lake effect snow is threatening western Michigan as more wind chill advisories cover other states.
“Wind chills extend all the way into Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa,” Schultz said. “And also they’ve got advisories up through the Northeast.”
Those under wind chill advisories have our northern neighbor to thank for the frigid cold, Schultz said.
“We’ve just got some cold air from Canada coming in,” she said.
