Schoolhouse’s future at Sleeping Bear Dunes up in air
Traverse City — A school district is pondering the future of a one-room schoolhouse in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in northern Michigan.
The Port Oneida Schoolhouse belongs to Glen Lake Community Schools, and two organizations have offered to help maintain it. School board president Fran Seymour says maintaining the schoolhouse is a drain on district resources and board members are looking into working with nonprofits and the National Park Service.
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports board members are mulling an agreement with Port Oneida Community Alliance. Kim Kelderhouse, a descendent of the property’s original owner and a member of the organization’s board, says attorneys from both parties are looking into requirements for transferring the property.
Kelderhouse says her organization wants to make the schoolhouse into a multipurpose space to benefit the community and visitors.
