Midland bridge named after Navy corpsman killed in action
Midland — A Midland bridge has been named in honor of a 20-year-old U.S. Navy hospital corpsman killed in action in Afghanistan in 2011.
The Midland Daily News reports that Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation this week designating the U.S. 10 span over Eastman Avenue as “Corpsman Aaron D. Ullom Memorial Bridge.”
Ullom, a 2009 graduate of Midland High School, died while on foot patrol in Helmand province. He was shot while tending to a wounded Marine.
The legislation’s primary sponsor was state Sen. Jim Stamas of Midland. Stamas says this country “remains the beacon of liberty in the world because of the courage of patriots like Corpsman Aaron Ullom, who too often make the ultimate sacrifice.”
The newspaper reports that July 9 is the tentative dedication date for the bridge.
