2 prison workers suspended after Nov. death of inmate

Ypsilanti — Officials say two Michigan prison workers are suspended following the November death of a 25-year-old inmate that remains under investigation.

The Michigan Department of Corrections confirmed the suspensions after The Ann Arbor News obtained documents including Janika Edmond’s prisoner file through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Department spokesman Chris Gautz says the workers are in the final stages of a disciplinary process.

Edmond was a prisoner at Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility near Ypsilanti and documents say she reported being “tired of being here” and hearing voices. In November, she was found with underwear tied around her neck and died at a hospital.

A prison report shows presumed cause of death was suicide, but autopsy results haven’t been released. Her family’s lawyer David S. Steingold also is investigating.
