Benton Township — Authorities say a 62-year-old man has died after a large tree fell on an excavator he was operating in southwestern Michigan.

The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph and WSJM-FM report the man was part of an excavation crew working on a drainage project on Tuesday in Berrien County’s Benton Township when the tree fell, crushing the cab of the excavator and pinning him inside.

The work was taking place near a subdivision. The man’s name wasn’t immediately released, but authorities said he was from Paw Paw.
