Lansing — A former Lansing-area gymnastics instructor accused of criminal sexual conduct in connection with a relationship involving a 14-year-old female student has been sentenced to 3-15 years in prison.

WLNS-TV reports Mikael Frutin learned his punishment Wednesday after earlier pleading guilty to two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in a deal with prosecutors.

East Lansing police started investigating the case in 2014 and say none of the alleged crimes happened at the gymnastics center in Delhi Township where Frutin worked.

Police say he fled the state when he became aware of the investigation. He was arrested in September by the U.S. Marshals Service in Los Angeles.
