Tree dedicated for 2 victims of Kalamazoo shootings
Mattawan — A tree has been dedicated in memory of two of the victims of February mass shootings in the Kalamazoo area.
Pastor Paul Fazio says the tree near the Mattawan High School gym will be a reminder to people to live their lives as fully as Richard Smith and his 17-year-old son, Tyler, who were shot while looking at new cars.
The Kalamazoo Gazette reports Fazio spoke to more than 100 family, friends, classmates and educators on Wednesday, which would have been Tyler’s 18th birthday.
Fazio says: “It’s not a memorial tree that represents an ending. It’s a memorial that represents life.”
Uber driver Jason Dalton is charged in the apparently random Kalamazoo-area attacks that killed six. He faces a May 20 hearing on whether the case goes to trial.
