An 18-year-old apparently drowned Tuesday evening while swimming at a lake in Ypsilanti Township, authorities said.

The teen had either been swimming to or from a small island near the Detroit Greenfield RV Park off Burton Road when “someone overheard him struggling and lost sight of him” about 8:30 p.m., said Derrick Jackson, community engagement director for the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

It was unclear if anyone had accompanied him, Jackson said. An onlooker called 911.

Township fire personnel, who responded along with county sheriff’s deputies, found the body, Jackson said. The teen’s name had not been released.

Officials remained at the scene after 11 p.m., interviewing witnesses.

“At this early stage, it sounds like it’s a very tragic accident,” Jackson said.
