Marquette — Authorities say two people apparently drowned amid strong currents and large waves in Lake Superior off of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The Mining Journal of Marquette and WLUC-TV report the bodies of a woman and a man were found Saturday following a search involving the Coast Guard, divers from the Marquette County sheriff’s department and Marquette police.

Crews had responded following a report of three people struggling in the water off Little Presque Isle near Marquette.

Investigators say two 22-year-old women waded into the water but one began to struggle. The other tried to help her and they both were swept away. A 24-year-old man went into the water to help but couldn’t make it back. Two bystanders saved one of the women.

Names of those involved weren’t immediately released.
