Most of Metro Detroit to dodge winds, rain and hail

Most of Metro Detroit is expected to dodge a patch of severe weather expected to move through the area this evening.

The biggest threat of damaging winds, torrential rainfall and large hail is in the southern parts of Wayne County as well as Washtenaw, Lenawee and Monroe counties.

“The possibilities are less the further north you go,” said Deb Elliott, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible after 10 p.m. A quarter- and a half-inch of rain is expected through 5 a.m. Thursday.

Meteorologist Sara Schultz said that the severity of the storm in southern Wayne County will depend on the storm’s strength, she said residents should expect winds of at least 60 mph as well as the possibility of hail that is about 1 inch in circumference.

Additionally, she said that although brief torrential rainfall is expected, the area shouldn’t get more than a quarter- to a half-inch of rain.

“When you get closer to the Ohio border, that’s when you should expect about an inch, 0.8- to 0.9-inch, of rain,” she said.

Detroit has been going through a dry spell so far this month. Schultz says the city has gotten 1.23 inches less precipitation than it normally would have by this point in June.

“Any rain will help, but it’s not going to bring us up to normal again,” Schultz said. “We’re looking at less than half an inch of rain.”
