Couple relinquishes rights to more than 100 dogs

Associated Press

Port Huron — A St. Clair County couple relinquished their rights to more than 100 dogs and cats found in their home as they faced charges of abandoning or cruelty to animals.

Sixty-six-year-old Michael Higgins and 56-year-old Lynn Higgins were arraigned Friday in St. Clair County. They’ve requested court-appointed lawyers and have hearings next month.

Authorities say the animals were removed last week from a Cottrellville Township home after complaints about the smell and noise at the property about 50 miles northeast of Detroit. The sheriff’s department says it appeared they had been breeding, showing and rescuing dogs.

The Times Herald of Port Huron reports the current count shows 102 dogs and three cats were found, including five dogs with signs of potentially deadly parvovirus. The couple asked to keep ownership of one cat.
