$40M project for Jackson County Airport moves ahead

Associated Press

Jackson — Officials say a $40 million project to update the Jackson County Airport is scheduled to wrap up next summer.

The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports work started in 2001 on the project, which includes a new primary runway that’s offset from the runway that it’s replacing. The new 5,350-foot runway is the same length as the old one, but is narrower.

The work will require the airport to be temporarily shut down next summer as final connections are made to the new runway.

The county is paying $6 million for trucking and fees to move debris from a former landfill on the airport property. Most of the rest of the remaining $34 million comes from the Federal Aviation Administration. The state also is contributing a small percentage.
