A 3-year-old Ypsilanti Township boy died after being shot by another boy on Sunday in what authorities are describing as an accidental shooting, police said.

Police got the call about the shooting at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, said Derrick Jackson, community engagement director for the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, which handles police duties in the township. The incident took place at the Country Meadows Apartments on the 200 block of Stevens Drive.

The boy was pronounced dead on the scene, Jackson said.

Police said the victim and another boy — whose age is not yet known — were playing with a gun when it went off, striking the 3-year-old.

Jackson was not immediately sure where on his body the victim was struck, or the age of the other boy, but did say the boys are not related. Their parents, he said, are in a relationship and live together.
