Two Ypsilanti Township residents have been charged with child abuse involving five children in their care.

Shivohn May and Michael G. May II faced a court hearing Monday, Washtenaw County records show.

Child protective proceedings were listed as having started on Feb. 15, and the children have since been removed from the home, according to the records.

Shivohn May and Michael May have a 4-year-old son together, according to a court filing. She also has four other children, ages 15, 12, 11, and 6, with other partners, officials wrote.

The couple are accused of hitting the children with a paddle and extension cords as well as forcing them to exercise excessively, Mlive.com reported.

Washtenaw County investigators did not immediately respond to emails seeking details of the allegations late Thursday.

Shivohn May, 35, has been charged with first-degree child abuse and third-degree child abuse in the presence of a child. She was held on a $200,000 bond and faces another hearing April 3 in front of Judge David Swartz.

Michael May, 34, also has been charged with first-degree child abuse and third-degree child abuse in the presence of a child. Court records show he also faced charges of torture and assault by strangulation.

He was jailed on a $400,000 bond. His next court hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. March 27.

Attorneys for the Mays did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday night.
