Police said a 68-year-old woman was killed Monday in a crash that closed southbound U.S. 23 for several hours.

Janet Rheinecker of Sylvania, Ohio, died after her vehicle was struck around 12:11 p.m. on southbound U.S. 23, about 1.5 miles south of Ida West Road in Summerfield Township, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Based on a preliminary investigation, Jeffrey Bowling, 54, of Gibsonburg, Ohio, was driving a semitrailer in the right lane of southbound U.S. 23 when he is alleged to have rear-ended a trailer being pulled by a Ford F350 pickup.

“The Ford pickup truck had been stopped on the roadway due to construction ahead,” officials said in a release Monday. “Upon impact, the Ford F350 struck a Lexus passenger car that was stopped ahead of it.”

Rheinecker, who was driving the Lexus, was forced into two other semitrailers that had also stopped due to the construction zone. She was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

There were no other injuries.

Alcohol was not a factor, officials said.

The crash remains under investigation.
