Marquette — A Michigan mine has requested to lease mineral rights from the state on land spanning nearly 15,300 acres.

The Mining Journal reports that much of the property is classified as Leasable Development with Restriction, meaning subsurface minerals can be mined, although additional regulatory review and permitting is required.

Meagen Morrison is the social responsibility adviser at Eagle Mine. Morrison says that leasing the parcels allows the mine to consider expanding exploration beyond the current footprint.

Officials from the Department of Natural Resources say that any work should be restricted from June through mid-July at the property to protect neo-tropical migrant birds during the nesting and fledging period.

Eagle Mine is in northern Michigamme Township and is the nation’s only primary nickel mine.
