Closures for pothole repairs begin in Oakland, Macomb
Daily lane and ramp closures begin at 7 a.m. Thursday on Interstates 696 and 75 and Telegraph in portions of Oakland and Macomb counties, the state transportation department said.
MDOT recently awarded a $5 million contract to Cadillac Asphalt for emergency pothole patchwork along the hardest-hit stretches in Metro Detroit, including parts of Interstate 696 in Macomb County and southbound Interstate 75 in Oakland County.
The rainy weather has slowed road crews using a hot mix of gooey asphalt material that adheres to surrounding concrete and cannot get wet.
“We can only do this on dry days,” Cross said. “We need sunrise to sunset.”
A host of work is on tap beginning Thursday and until the work is done, Cross said. “Hopefully, it won’t take too long.”
Westbound I-696 from I-75 to Woodward has two left lanes closed from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3-7 p.m., and three left lanes closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The I-75 northbound and southbound ramps connecting to westbound I-696 are closed from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
Only the two right lanes will be open between those time periods, Cross said. If motorists are going east, they’ll end up at Dequindre, with the other construction. She suggests, as an alternate route: “Stay on 75 to Eight Mile and go west to Woodward.” If north, go west to Woodward.
In Macomb, eastbound I-696 has three left lanes closed from Dequindre to Mound 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and two closed 3- 6:30 p.m.
In Oakland, southbound I-75 has two right lanes closed, leaving only the left lane open, between Adams and Crooks 7 a.m to 7 p.m.
Also, southbound Telegraph has two left lanes closed between Hickory Grove and Long Lake 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
“Repairs are taking longer than initially thought,” Cross said, due to the rainy weather. “There’s just so many factors.
