Rain may follow spring-like temps in Metro Detroit

Metro Detroit finally started to feel like spring Monday, but more of April's showers are in store, the National Weather Service said.

After a mix of freezing rain and snow in the middle of last week, a high pressure system was expected to bring a high temperature of 68 degrees Monday.

But that is expected to give way to wet weather.

"All good things must come to an end," said Steven Freitag, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township. "We've got a gloomy Tuesday — cloudy with some light rain showers."

He said Wednesday will be dry, but cooler "just as you get use to the warmer temps." 

Various fronts traversing the northern United States are to blame, Freitag said. 

"It's pretty standard for spring," he said. "It's pretty common to have wild swings."

But on Thursday, temperatures will rise closer to 60 degrees, Freitag said. 

It'll be a little cooler on Saturday, but then warm up on Sunday, according to the agency's forecast.

"But the main thing is it'll be dry," Freitag said. "That's all that matters for most people."

The Detroit area's average temperature in April is about 40 degrees. So far this month, the average temperature is eight degrees cooler than usual, according to the weather service.

Detroit's average precipitation for the month is about two inches. Through Monday, the area has seen almost 3.5 inches, the agency said.

Extended forecast

Tuesday: Cloudy with a high near 56 degrees and a low of about 43 degrees. There's also a 60 percent chance of rain with about a tenth of an inch possible.

Wednesday: Cloudy and gradually becoming mostly sunny with a high near 52 degrees and a low of about 37 degrees. There's a 30 percent chance of rain before 2 p.m.

Thursday: Mostly sunny with a high near 57 degrees and a low of about 41 degrees.

Friday: Partly sunny with a high near 57 degrees and a low of about 37 degrees. Showers are possible after 2 p.m. and before 8 p.m. 

Saturday: Mostly sunny with a high near 54 degrees and a low of about 39 degrees.

Sunday: Sunny with a high near 58 degrees.
