A 71-year-old motorist from Monroe was fatally struck in a traffic crash in Frenchtown Township Wednesday, officials said.

Michigan State Police said at 2:26 p.m., Samuel Venier was stopped at the intersection of War and Newport roads to turn west onto Newport.

He failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was struck on the driver's side by a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling east on Newport Road, police said.

Venier was driving a 2000 Ford Taurus. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The 1999 Jeep was driven by an 18-year-old female from Newport, who was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Trenton for minor injuries.

State police said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.
