Following heavy rain over the weekend, thunderstorms Tuesday could spark flooding in Metro Detroit, the National Weather Service said.

A flood watch is in effect for Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties through 8 a.m.

The stormy weather could cause flooding on low-lying and poorly drained areas south of Michigan Highway 59. Rising rivers, creeks and streams south of M-59 also could flood over, the weather service said.

The Huron River in Hamburg had already topped the 6.5-foot flood level Monday night and could reach 7.6 feet in the next 24 hours, according to weather service records. The river also was nearing flood stage, at 16 feet, in Ann Arbor, according to the weather  service.

Thunderstorms are expected to diminish Tuesday with scattered showers in the early afternoon. Lenawee, Monroe, Washtenaw and Wayne counties were expected to get the most rain.

After Tuesday, however, a front that dumped all the rain on southeast Michigan will move from the area, the weather service said.

The weather during the rest of the work week should be mostly sunny with temperatures reaching 76 on Wednesday, 77 on Thursday and 70 on Friday.

Warm temperatures and increased moisture in the air have combined to produce thunderstorms and the rain, said Alex Manion, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service at its White Lake Township office.

There's also a small part of the state that could see strong winds and large hail.

Most of southeast Michigan had 2-4 inches of rain over the last couple of days. Manion said areas of Metro Detroit had between 1 1/2 and 3 1/2 inches of rain over the past 72 hours.
