The Mackinac Bridge will be closed briefly Wednesday morning, officials said.

The Mighty Mac will be closed for 30 minutes at 5 a.m. and then again at 6:15 a.m., according the Mackinac Bridge Authority.

Officials said the closure schedule was selected to minimize the effect on traffic and is weather-dependent.

The bridge is being closed so painting contractors can remove two large movable scaffolding platforms from the north tower. The platforms were used to paint horizontal sections linking the bridge's legs.

The painting is part of a two-season, $6.3 million project to repaint the bridge's north tower. The project is the first in the bridge's 60-year history to strip down and repair one of the iconic ivory towers.
