Police found the body of a man accused in a hit-and-run that left a motorcyclist dead in Imlay City early Saturday, according to a spokesperson for the Imlay City Police Department.

Authorities located the body of Alexander George Waschull, 47, in a field near Newark Road and Cedar Street about 3 a.m. after receiving a tip that a man was seen in the area.

Police said Waschull died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police said Waschull was driving a silver Jeep near a Big Boy restaurant on M-53 north of Newark Road about 10 a.m. when the crash occurred, Investigators said. He then fled on foot.

Waschull has had numerous contacts with law enforcement for weapons offenses as well as domestic violence, operating while intoxicated and disorderly conduct, police said.

Though the Michigan Law Enforcement Information Network lists a yet-to-be served personal protection order prohibiting Waschull from having firearms, he had numerous loaded weapons in his Jeep, officials reported.
